Diabetic Relief

In late 2008, it was confirmed by the FDA that over 1,000 teenagers were injured and over a dozen were actually killed by insulin pumps. Yikes!

These sorts of statistics are unacceptable. Aren’t insulin pumps supposed to be safe? What went wrong?

Insulin pumps are small, rectangle shaped devices that are meant to replace everyday insulin injections. They were thought to be ideal for teens with diabetes so as to not interfere with their busy lifestyle.

While looking into the incidents, the FDA was able to determine that in the cases of injury (and especially the cases where teens dies from insulin overdoses) were caused most commonly by improper use of the pumps. In other cases, the adverse effects were causes by improper maintenance of the pumps.

If you are currently using an insulin pump or planning on acquiring one for your teen, you need to be well educated in terms of how to use the pump and how to keep it in working condition. Even a simple mistake like dropping your pump on the ground could lead to serious complications. Complications for senior citizens with insulin pumps could also be life threatening if evasive action is not taken quickly.
